Shipyard
A unique house on the North Norfolk coast with a sun filled garden and cherished story. The vernacular architecture of the area is composed of limestone, red brick, flint and timber which create intriguing textures, patterns, and a strong sense of place. The house interiors were much the same, a mixture of materials, old and new and bespoke features.
Given how deeply rooted the existing house felt, form and materiality were integral to the design of the garden. During site analysis, before commencing the conceptual design, we carried out a Sustainability and material study with the intention that the design will be led by what is locally available. This included sourcing finishes and features from a reclamation yard; timber off cuts from local tree surgeons; and skills from local craftsmen. This allows for a sensitive and more sustainable design which favours repurposing, traditional construction methods and reducing transportation.
