Revisiting Gardens

Over the summer, we’ve revisited several gardens we completed in the past year — to see how they’ve settled, how clients are using them, and how the planting has evolved through the seasons. For us, these visits are one of the most rewarding parts of being a garden design studio: seeing how a garden takes on a life of its own once it leaves the drawing board.
Each return visit reminds us how important it is to get the bones of a garden right from the start — the underlying structure that allows everything else to flourish. Where the paths lead, where people naturally pause and sit, the positioning of trees that anchor the space — these early design decisions shape how a garden is lived in and loved. Seeing clients use these spaces as we imagined (and often in new, delightful ways) has been hugely rewarding. We were buoyed by how mature trees, established shrubs, and well-placed seating have created landscapes that already feel rooted and whole.
A well-designed garden is never static. It’s a living, responsive environment that changes with time, care, and weather. Revisiting allows us to notice what’s thriving, what needs gentle adjustment, and how the balance of the design can be fine-tuned as the garden matures.
We believe the most successful gardens grow through stewardship rather than simple maintenance. It takes a skilled gardener — someone creative, observant, and patient — to nurture the planting design and guide its development. A garden isn’t something to hold in a fixed moment; it’s a relationship that deepens over time.
Are you looking for a garden that matures gracefully, season after season? Or are you a gardener or craftsperson who shares our perspective?
