A Garden for a Moss Girl (and her family)

Moss Studio is collaborating with Matthew Giles Architects on the transformation of a double-fronted Edwardian villa. The house is being reimagined for contemporary living, integrating an air source heat pump and solar panels to achieve low-energy performance while carefully preserving its period character.

The garden enjoys views across neighbouring mature trees, and the design embraces this borrowed landscape by softening and blurring the site’s boundaries. A wildlife pond, abundant planting, a no-mow lawn and winding gravel paths create a rich mosaic of habitats — supporting biodiversity while offering a calm, immersive space for the owners to slow down and connect with nature.

Inspired by the work of John Little at Hilldrop, reclaimed materials from the site will be thoughtfully incorporated into the garden. Soil excavated for the terrace and pond will be reused to form gentle mounds and hollows, shaping a more dynamic terrain and increasing ecological diversity.
